Melissa M. Thompson, LCSW, OSW-C

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Melissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She earned a Masters degree in Social Work from Aurora University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human and Organizational Development from DePaul University in Chicago. Melissa has experience working with adults, families, teens, and children. Along with facilitating support and therapy groups, Melissa provides individual and family counseling services.

Melissa believes that at best, therapy is a mutual and respectful dialogue between two people, one of who happens to need some assistance. The therapeutic relationship needs to feel safe, friendly and comfortable. It is not easy to trust a stranger with one's personal life story and deepest concerns. Melissa's therapeutic approach is to use her genuine personality and warm sense of humor to build trusting, caring relationships with clients.

Her style is practical, warm and engaging. Her theoretical framework is a combination of exploring the needs of the client while taking into account his or her environment. She enjoys helping her clients discover the hidden strengths within themselves and their relationships.

She has a strong interest in psychosocial oncology, working to enhance the quality of life of those impacted by cancer. In addition to working with cancer survivors and their families, she also works to support oncology professionals through educational workshops. This research and professional interest has provided her with a unique background, allowing her to support individuals and families impacted by a variety of changes, medical issues and disabilities.

Melissa has held a variety of leadership roles in the corporate world with specialization in organizational development, training, program development and leadership coaching. Melissa has extensive experience consulting for businesses, industry, and health care. She is also a professor at Aurora University in the graduate school of social work.

In 2011, Melissa was the recipient of The Hoffman Estates High School's Distinguished Alumni Award for her outstanding achievements, contributions and commitment to the field of social work.
